The Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 is a 100% independent non-profit organization in Island Heights, New Jersey funded entirely by donations, fundraisers and grants. Station 53 operates two engines equipped for fire suppression, forcible entry and ventilation operations, a water rescue team consisting of a utility truck for transporting personnel and equipment and a boat equipped for both fire suppression and water and ice rescue operations, a brush unit equipped for off-road fire suppression operations and a command vehicle operated by the fire chief.
Membership consists entirely of volunteers who devote countless hours to training, responding to emergencies, fundraising, administration and maintaining equipment, apparatus and the station. Firefighters are trained in all aspects of fire suppression, ventilation, search and rescue, forcible entry, ladders, salvage and overhaul, water and ice rescue, hazardous materials and CPR. Many members also pursue additional training as fire officers, instructors, wildland firefighters, incident commanders, etc.
The station's response area consists of the Borough of Island Heights, as well as much of the Township of Toms River and the northern barrier island communities through mutual aid agreements. Station 53 responds automatically with Toms River Fire Companies 1 and 2 to the Money Island section of Toms River (adjacent to Island Heights), with the East Dover Fire Company during business hours, and throughout other areas of Toms River and the northern barrier island communities on working incidents and multiple alarm fires. Similarly, Station 53 has pre-established mutual aid agreements with these neighboring stations to provide assistance by responding to working incidents inside Island Heights in return, due to the manpower and equipment required to effectively suppress a fire, search for victims, ventilate heat and smoke, provide access and egress to and from all areas of the fire building, limit exposure and extension to neighboring structures, mitigate hazards, salvage property and overhaul to prevent rekindles.
Celebrating over a century of service to the Borough of Island Heights, the Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company has a rich history rooted in tradition and brotherhood. If you are interested in joining us, please feel free to check out the "JOIN" tab.
